Understanding Exe

Who is Experience "Exe" Parsell?

This is the question that has plagued Exe her entire life. She doesn’t know who she is, or where she came from, or why her wishes come horribly true in unexpected ways. The elusive answers to her questions about her past are all Exe thinks about—when she’s not concentrating on suppressing her powers.

Exe has technically gotten older and taller as time passed, but deep down she knows that she quit growing up the moment she made a deadly wish many years ago… But she doesn’t like to think about the tragedy she caused that mentally and emotionally paralyzed her.

If you really want some basic answers about who she is, your best bet is to ask her brothers. As Thone poetically puts it, “Exe is someone who goes walking after rain as if she’s trying to catch it—as if she wants to lose herself under the cover of thunder.”

The rest would simply say that she’s kind of a loner, which they find rather impressive considering that she’s constantly surrounded by her family and their many friends.

Exe isn’t currently into “girly” things, like clothes and makeup and boys, but that’s probably the result of growing up with six brothers and no sisters. Not that these things don’t interest her—she simply has no room in her fear and dread-plagued mind for such light, happy things.

As far as talents and interests, each brother would probably give you a different answer to that question. But they’ll all say the same thing if you ask about her greatest fear: claustrophobia—being trapped in tight, confined spaces.

(Well, Easy would probably give this same answer, but he’s the only one who knows that Exe has a much greater fear. But he’s not sharing that secret with anyone. Not even Exe knows that he knows...)

Just okay at a lot of things...
Unlike her brothers, Exe hasn’t developed a passion for any specific interest yet—but she is kinda good at a lot of different things. That’s because she’s become her brothers’ go-to compatriot whenever they want to spend time participating in or talking about their own interests.

So Exe spends the majority of her free time being active with Seph, artistic with Thone, academic with Moth, gaming with Henny-Boy, or building with Charley. As for Easy, Exe just hangs out with him watching movies or casually chatting. Well, she does whenever he has a moment alone, which isn’t often.

Retro Obsession...

Moth would probably be the closest to correct when describing Exe’s interests, because like him, she’s absolutely fascinated by history. But he’s more interested in the big historical picture, like wars, revolutions, and the rise and fall of various governments throughout the centuries. Exe is exclusively interested in everyday history—how people in the past survived and thrived from day to day.

That’s why moving to a living history town like Nowhere is a dream come true for her. If only she could quit worrying about her out-of-control powers long enough to appreciate it. While Exe knows she’ll enjoy learning how people lived in the 1880s Old West, she personally prefers exploring how people lived in the early twentieth century, with a particular penchant for the 1920s and ‘30s.

While the Art Deco eras are her all-time favorites, at the moment she’s obsessed with the 1980s. Walkmans, sticker albums, neon, arcade games, and all the retro films, toys, music, and TV shows. It took her a minute to get it, but now she understands why the era intrigues her. Exe knows so little about her own origins that she can’t help but crave to learn every little detail she can about her parents’ own childhoods.
